A New Keynesian Model with Heterogeneous Expectations

چکیده
This paper introduces heterogeneous expectations into a New Keynesian model. Our primary theoretical contribution is to provide an aggregation result for a model with nominal rigidities and heterogeneous bounded rationality. We incorporate bounded rationality at the individual agent level and determine restrictions on expectations operators sufficient to imply aggregate IS and AS relations of the same functional form as those under rationality. This comparability allows for explicit analysis of the impact of heterogeneity on the model’s dynamics. As an example, we consider a case where a fraction of agents are rational and the remainder are adaptive. We show that incorporating heterogeneous expectations into the New Keynesian model may significantly alter the determinacy properties: models that are determinate under the assumption of rationality may possess multiple equilibria in the presence of expectations heterogeneity, even for small departures from rationality. The Misspecification of Expectations in New Keynesian Models: A DSGE-VAR Approach
This paper tests the ability of popular New Keynesian models, which are traditionally used to study monetary policy and business cycles, to match the data regarding a key channel for monetary transmission: the dynamic interactions between macroeconomic variables and their corresponding expectations. In the empirical analysis, we exploit direct data on expectations from surveys. To explain the j...
متن کاملDynamic Predictor Selection in a New Keynesian Model with Heterogeneous Expectations
This paper introduces dynamic predictor selection into a New Keynesian model with heterogeneous expectations and examines its implications for monetary policy. We extend Branch and McGough (2006) by endogenizing the fraction of rational versus adaptive agents along the lines of Brock and Hommes (1997). We show that models that are determinate under the assumption of full rationality may possess...
متن کاملLabour Market Frictions and Heterogeneous Expectations
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of bounded rationality on labour market dynamics. The model is based on a standard New Keynesian model that incorporates labour market search and matching frictions developed by Trigari (2006). During the bargaining process, wages and working hours are jointly determined by firms and workers. Expectations heterogeneity is introduced by assumin...
متن کاملModelling the Heterogeneous Price Setting Behavior of Firms (DSGE Approach)
Despite the empirical evidence of the difference in the degree of price stickiness of goods and services, in the new standard Keynesian models, the same price stickiness is considered for all firms producing intermediate goods. In recent years, a new generation of pricing models has been introduced to simulate the heterogeneous price setting behavior in which, unlike standard pricing models, th...
متن کاملMonetary Policy and Heterogeneous Expectations
This paper studies the implications for monetary policy of heterogeneous expectations in a New Keynesian model. The assumption of rational expectations is replaced with parsimonious forecasting models where agents select between predictors that are underparameterized. In a Misspecification Equilibrium agents only select the best-performing statistical models. We demonstrate that, even when mone...
